A state in the western part of India spread over 1600 km. India’s ninth largest state in terms of population. This state is bordered by Pakistan on one side, Rajasthan on one side, Diu and Daman on one side and Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh on the other side. The capital of this vast state is Gandhinagar. But some time ago there was none of this. If there was only Bombay (Mumbai) State. At the time of India’s independence, both Maharashtra and Gujarat were included in the region called Mumbai.
When the Reorganization of States Act 1956 was imposed, two separate states, Gujarat and Maharashtra, were demanded from Mumbai and became separate states.
How did Gujarat demand a separate state???
The Act-1956 reorganized the states of independent India and created states based on language. Under this, the states of Karnataka for Kannada speakers, Andhra Pradesh for Telugu speakers, Kerala for Malayalam speakers and Tamil Nadu for Tamil speakers were created.
Later, when Marathi speakers and Gujarati speakers demanded a separate state for themselves, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru bifurcated the state of Mumbai and formed Maharashtra for the Marathi speakers and Gujarat for the Gujarati speakers on 1 May 1960.
Thus, 1st May is also celebrated as Gujarat Foundation Day and Maharashtra Foundation Day. Ahmedabad was the capital of Gujarat state when it was formed but in 1970 Gandhinagar was declared as the capital of Gujarat state.
The main dialect of Gujarat state is Gujarati, but also 11 different types of dialects are spoken in Gujarat state.
