The midday meal scheme in the state of Gujarat was started in the year 1984 by the Chief Minister of Gujarat state, Madhavasih Solanki. Also, under the Central Government National Nutrition Assistance Program was launched on 15 August 1995.
In this scheme, 75% assistance from the central government and 25% assistance from the state government is given to the midday meal scheme. The provision of this scheme provides for free mid-day meal in government-aided schools and primary and upper primary schools run by local panchayat bodies.
Mid-Day Meal Extended
In the year 2003, it was extended to children studying in educational guarantee centers and alternative and innovative education centers. Since October 2007, it has been extended to children studying in classes 6 to 8 in 3479 educationally backward blocks of the country.
Since the year 2008/09 this program has been designed for all children studying at upper primary level in all regions of the country. National Child Labor Project schools have also been included under mid-day meal scheme from 01.04.2010.
Benefits from Mid-Day Meal in Gujarat
With this Mid Day Meal scheme, children who were hungry at home and did not pay attention to study in school and children could not pay attention to study to get an education but this scheme has solved this problem now. Having children eat lunch together has also greatly reduced the likelihood of gender discrimination. Earlier, girls did not attend school; now they have reached school with other children. So the rate of literacy among boys and girls is increasing. This scheme is also increasing employment in villages. They are getting employment at the local level as both men and women are needed for cooking and other work in Madhyan Bhojan Yojana.
