The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), also known as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), is a transformative Indian social welfare program enacted in 2005. It aims to provide employment and livelihood security to rural households by guaranteeing at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every registered household in rural areas.
NREGA not only alleviates rural poverty by creating wage employment opportunities but also promotes sustainable development through the creation of rural infrastructure assets like roads, water conservation structures, and more. It is a pivotal tool in India’s efforts to enhance rural livelihoods, reduce distress migration, and empower marginalized communities.
